Cathedral Cemetery in Łomża

The Cathedral Cemetery in Łomża is a burial ground spanning about 6.6 hectares and housing more than 560 historical tombstones in various architectural styles. The grave markers display Classical, Neo-Gothic, and Neo-Renaissance designs that reflect the artistic preferences of different periods in the 19th century.

The cemetery was established in 1801 outside the city limits and initially served Roman Catholic burials. During the 1830s it expanded to include Protestant and Orthodox burial sections.

The cemetery holds graves of notable residents such as botanist Jakub Waga and writer Feliks Bernatowicz, whose lives shaped the city's story across centuries. The tombstones tell of merchants, craftsmen, and officials whose names and memories remain inscribed in stone.

Access is through a monumental gate built in 1879 on Kopernika Street in the northern part of Łomża. Wear sturdy shoes as the pathways can be uneven in places throughout the grounds.

The cemetery displays a fascinating collection of gravestones from different artistic periods within a relatively compact area. The mix of these varying architectural styles tells a story of shifting tastes and influences that shaped Łomża over more than a century.
