Przemyśl Fort I "Salis-Soglio", Defensive fort in Siedliska, Poland.
Przemyśl Fort I Salis-Soglio is a five-sided defensive structure with four inner courtyards built from reinforced concrete and featuring multiple gun positions and ammunition storage areas. The fort includes underground passages and fortified walls designed to create a complete defensive perimeter.
Construction of the fort took place between 1882 and 1886 as part of the broader Przemyśl Fortress complex built by Austria-Hungary. The structure withstood and was damaged during various conflicts in the 20th century but retained most of its original design.
The fort is named after an Austro-Hungarian military commander and reflects how border defense shaped life in this region during the late 1800s. Walking through its passages and courtyards gives a sense of the constant vigilance required in this strategic location.
The fort is accessible via the road between Medyka and Siedliska and sits very close to the Polish-Ukrainian border. The site has uneven ground and sturdy footwear is advised for exploring the passages and courtyards safely.
Situated just meters from the Polish-Ukrainian border, this fort was long inaccessible to visitors due to its sensitive location. Two preserved 9 centimeter artillery pieces from 1875 were discovered during excavations in 2004 and remain on site as reminders of its defensive purpose.
