Rezerwat przyrody Śliże, Nature reserve in Borzymy, Poland
Rezerwat przyrody Śliże is a nature reserve near the village of Borzymy, in the Wołomin district of Masovian Voivodeship, Poland. It centers on two lakes that are slowly turning into raised bogs, surrounded by forest and wetland areas.
The reserve was established in 1981, at a time when protecting wetland habitats in Poland was becoming a growing concern. It sits within the Nadbużański Landscape Park, which adds another layer of protection to the area.
Paths through the area are simple and wind through open ground near the lake shores. Visiting in the early morning gives the best chance to observe birds and experience the area at its most undisturbed.
The two lakes in the reserve are living examples of a process called paludification, where open water gradually gets covered by a floating mat of peat moss. Plants like round-leaved sundew and white water-lily grow side by side on the surface of these mats.
