Rożnów Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Rożnów, Poland
Rożnów Castle is a medieval fortress ruin standing on a steep hill above the Dunajec River with remaining walls and interior structures preserved to window height. The complex contained multiple building sections with both residential and defensive areas, with various fragments still visible today.
The fortress was built between 1350 and 1370 by the Rożen family in Gothic style. It later became the residence of the famous Polish knight Zawisza Czarny in 1426.
The ruins display Gothic architectural details still visible on the standing walls today. Visitors can observe the style and construction methods of this medieval period as they walk through the site.
The castle site is easily accessible from the road between Grodek and Rożnów and sits near Rożnów Lake with its recreational facilities. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the hill is steep and pathways can be uneven.
Excavations in 2016 uncovered artifacts from the time of Zawisza Czarny that offer insight into the knight's life. These findings led to plans for a memorial space honoring this medieval warrior.
