Rożnów Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Rożnów, Poland
Rożnów Castle is a medieval castle ruin set on a steep hill above the Dunajec River in the Lesser Poland region of Poland. The remaining walls and interior structures survive in places up to window height, and the complex includes both residential and defensive sections.
The castle was built in the second half of the 14th century by the Rożen family in the Gothic style. In the early 15th century it passed to Zawisza Czarny, one of the most celebrated Polish knights of his era.
The standing walls still show Gothic stonework that visitors can study up close as they walk through the site. The layout of the old rooms and towers gives a clear sense of how the space was once divided between living quarters and defense.
The ruins are easy to reach from the road between Grodek and Rożnów, close to Rożnów Lake. The hill is steep and the paths can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before heading up.
Excavations in 2016 uncovered objects from the time of Zawisza Czarny that shed light on daily life at the castle in the early 15th century. These finds triggered plans to create a memorial space on the site dedicated to the knight.
