The Biała Podlaska prison operates as a semi-open penitentiary institution with sections for repeat offenders, a detention ward, and a therapeutic unit for alcohol-dependent inmates.
The prison, established in 1898, was constructed on land confiscated from the Sisters of Charity order after the January Uprising, replacing the previous facility in Radziwiłł Castle cellars.
The facility maintains a library, sports hall, chapel, art workshop, and work club, providing educational and rehabilitation opportunities for inmates throughout their sentences.
The prison holds 296 inmates in the main building and 76 additional spaces in the External Division at Zabłocie, with visitation hours every Sunday and Monday.
During World War II, the facility experienced severe overcrowding under Gestapo supervision, with secret organizations operating to plan inmate escapes.
