Bardo Castle, Medieval castle ruins at Bardzka Mountain, Poland.
Bardo Castle is a medieval fortress ruin on Bardzka Mountain featuring an oval-shaped stone structure with defensive walls positioned on a steep mountainside. The remains sit at significant elevation and show the typical layout of a fortified mountain stronghold from the Middle Ages.
The stone fortress was founded in the late 13th century under Duke Bolko I, who later sold it to a knight from Dzbanow in 1301. This transfer of ownership marked a shift in control over the mountain stronghold during the early medieval period.
Archaeological excavations between 1982 and 1991 revealed numerous artifacts including Prague silver coins, metal objects, and bone crafts from medieval times.
The path to the castle follows marked hiking trails in green and blue starting from the parking area and clearly signposted throughout. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear as the terrain is steep and uneven.
An earthquake in August 1598 severely damaged the castle walls, causing sections of the structure to slide down the steep mountainside into the river below. This natural event permanently altered the fortress appearance and accelerated its decline.
