Działdowo Castle, Gothic castle in Działdowo, Poland
Działdowo Castle is a Gothic brick castle in Działdowo, northern Poland, sitting on a hillside above wetlands and the Działdówka river. On the southeast side stands a large residential wing with brick walls rising from fieldstone foundations, and a gatehouse with a five-pillar bridge spans the water moat at the entrance.
The Teutonic Knights began building here in 1306 with a small watchtower, and over the following centuries the structure was gradually expanded into a larger fortification. Each phase of growth left visible traces that can still be read in the walls today.
The castle reflects the building style of the Teutonic Knights through its pointed arches and carefully laid brickwork that still defines its appearance today. Visitors can see at close range how medieval builders worked with simple materials to create lasting walls.
The castle sits on a hillside, so sturdy walking shoes make exploring the grounds much easier. The north and east sides offer the clearest views of the building and the wetlands surrounding it.
The castle foundation goes roughly 5.5 meters into the ground to hold firm in the marshy soil along the river. This level of groundwork was unusually demanding for a medieval construction in such a location.
