Dąbrówno Castle

Dąbrówno Castle is a ruin standing on an isthmus between two lakes, with brick wall fragments revealing its medieval defensive design. The visible remains show how the fortress was organized and what parts of its structure have survived centuries of decay.

The Teutonic Knights began construction of the fortress in 1400, but within a decade Polish forces attacked and destroyed it during a military campaign. This destruction marked a turning point in control of the region.

The castle marks a shift from Teutonic military stronghold to Polish administrative seat across several centuries of regional change. It stands as a reminder of how power and control moved between different groups in this part of Europe.

The ruins can be reached via Ostródzka street in Dąbrówno, where information panels explain the medieval layout. Wear sturdy shoes since the ground is uneven and paths to the ruins are not always paved.

The two lakes surrounding the fortress served as more than just defense and shaped major trade routes passing through the region. This location made the spot a strategic hub for controlling goods and people moving across the area.
