Спутник, Residential district in northern Tomsk, Russia.
Sputnik is a residential settlement on the northern edge of Tomsk, Russia, bordered by the Bolshaya Kirgizka River and surrounded by forests. Buildings spread across the area between the river and wooded sections beyond the city limits.
Founded in 1964, the settlement initially housed workers for the educational nuclear reactor at Tomsk Polytechnic University. This connection to nuclear science shaped its early development and character.
The settlement has its own kindergarten and local shops where residents regularly gather. This small community maintains strong neighborhood ties that show in everyday interactions.
The settlement connects to central Tomsk via an asphalt road through Svechnoy village. Free transport services for residents were introduced in November 2021 to improve access to the city center.
The area between the Kirgizka River and the settlement served as a recreation spot for Tomsk residents from 1965 to 1972. This zone offered relaxation near nature for both locals and city visitors during that period.
