The Prison building in Tobolsk is a stone complex in the heart of Siberia, made up of thick walls, barred windows, and several cell blocks arranged around a central yard. Defensive ramparts ring the entire site, reinforcing its character as a secured detention facility.
The complex was built between 1838 and 1855 and served as a working prison in Siberia for over a century. It held both political detainees and common prisoners before closing in 1989.
The heavy metal doors and original cell furnishings give a direct sense of what daily life behind these walls looked like. Photographs of former prisoners displayed on the exterior walls add a personal and sobering quality to the visit.
The site is best explored on a guided tour, which gives access to the cell blocks and exhibits about penal history. The route covers several levels and narrow corridors, so comfortable shoes make the visit easier.
