Prospekt Mira 39-41, Cultural heritage mansion at Prospekt Mira, Russia
Prospekt Mira 39-41 is a two-story mansion on one of the main avenues of the Meshchansky District in Moscow, Russia, known for its asymmetrical facade with ornamental balconies and large arched windows. The building today houses the Moscow Cultural Fund alongside several shops and gathering spaces.
The building was put up in the late 18th century as a private residence and changed hands several times, passing through owners such as Major Sergei Kozlovsky and the Kuznetsov merchant family. It was nationalized in 1918 after the October Revolution and has been in public use ever since.
The facade carries Atlas figures made by sculptor Sergei Konenkov early in his career. These figures are still visible from the street and give the building a quality that sets it apart from the other buildings along the avenue.
The mansion sits directly on Prospekt Mira, a busy main road, and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. Since the various spaces inside the building keep different hours, it is worth checking what is open before you arrive.
This building is the only surviving part of the original estate, as the main house was torn down to make way for Moscow's metro construction. What visitors see today is not a complete property but a fragment of something much larger that once stood here.
