Городская усадьба Е. Г. Левашевой

The Levasheva City Estate is a residential complex on Novaya Basmannaya Street with multiple structures of varying heights and styles. The ensemble includes a two-story brick building and a six-story gray structure that together form a cohesive architectural composition.

The estate was owned by Countess E.I. Shuvalova in 1782 before coming into the possession of the noble Levashev family, who carried out major renovations in 1831. These alterations shaped the complex's appearance as it stands today.

Writer Pyotr Chaadaev made this estate his home starting in 1833 and created his philosophical works here. The building became a gathering place where significant ideas of Russian intellectual life took shape and were discussed.

The estate now houses the Radio Engineering Institute and retains its status as a protected regional heritage site. Visitors should note that the complex operates as an active research facility with limited access and specific visiting times.

In 1836 Pyotr Chaadaev received the official declaration of his insanity within these walls, marking a turning point in his life and work. This dramatic event tied the estate forever to a pivotal moment in Russian intellectual history.
