Усть-Ветлужский могильник, Archaeological burial ground near Yurino, Russia.
Ust-Vetluzhsky burial ground is an archaeological site located on the left bank of the Volga River near Yurino, consisting of two distinct areas: one on a riverside platform and another on higher ground. The two zones contain layered evidence of human occupation from prehistoric times.
The burial ground was discovered in 2000 by local researcher Evgeny Shalakhov and contains burials from the Bronze Age, particularly from the Seima-Turbino period. Artifacts recovered span different phases of this ancient epoch.
The excavations revealed bronze spearheads, axes, knives, bracelets, and flint tools, indicating a mixed population of Seima-Turbino and Abashevo-Pokrov traditions.
The site holds federal cultural heritage protection status and requires special permission for visits. Contact local authorities in advance to arrange access and learn about current site conditions.
The hilltop section contains richly furnished burials that suggest military or elite status from Bronze Age times. These graves differ notably from those found in the flatter riverside zone.
