Golden Hills, Hillfort in Melikhovskaya, Russia.
The archaeological complex contains stone fortifications situated along the Aksay River, 70 kilometers east of Rostov-on-Don in southern Russia.
The fortress served as a strategic point within the defensive network of the Khazar Khaganate during the early medieval period from the 8th to 10th centuries.
Excavations at Golden Hills revealed artifacts characteristic of the Saltovo-Mayaki settlements, indicating strong connections with the Khazar civilization in medieval Russia.
Research teams from Russian, American, and British institutions conducted extensive geomagnetic surveys and excavated 100 square meters of the archaeological site.
The position of Golden Hills near Semikarakorsk, which housed the main Khazar fort, suggests its role as a secondary fortification in regional defense systems.
