GES-2 in Moscow, Cultural center in Yakimanka District, Moscow, Russia.
GES-2 is a cultural center in Yakimanka District in Moscow with bright blue pipes along its facade and a large covered courtyard. The glass roofing connects several building wings and creates an open passageway between the exhibition halls.
The building was constructed in 1907 as a power station to supply Moscow's tram network. It remained operational until 2014 and was then converted into an arts venue.
The gallery areas show contemporary art from Russia and former Soviet territories through rotating exhibitions. Artists work on-site in studio residences and develop new projects directly within the building.
The central courtyard serves as an orientation point and connects all areas of the complex. The pathways are level and most rooms are accessible without steps.
A small birch forest grows inside the complex and brings nature into the industrial architecture. Photovoltaic cells on the glass roof contribute to the building's energy supply.
