Church of the Ascension of Christ, Kalyazin, Orthodox church building in Kalyazin, Russia
The Church of the Ascension of Christ is a Russian Orthodox parish church in Kalyazin with a 19th-century bell tower rising above the Volga Reservoir. The tower stands on a small artificial island and is the only visible remnant of the original complex.
The church complex was built in the 19th century and served the city as a center of religious life for decades. When the Uglich Dam was completed in the mid-20th century, much of the town was flooded and the church disappeared underwater, leaving only the bell tower visible.
The church displays traditional Russian Orthodox design with neoclassical features that shaped the religious life of the city across generations. Believers and visitors gather here to experience the visible remnants of this faith tradition.
The bell tower is best viewed from the water, with boat tours available during summer months. Visitors should bring warm clothing as it can be windy on the water and the views are better from different angles.
The tower was originally part of a larger complex and was never fully submerged underwater, instead continuing to rise about 40 meters (130 feet) above the water surface. This unintended preservation has made it a fascinating blend of monument and natural wonder that draws photographers and history enthusiasts.
