Музей «Скирмановские высоты»
The museum 'Skirmanovskie Heights' is a memorial site in Ruzsky District housed in a modest building that was once a childcare facility and renovated to preserve local history. The displays include military uniforms, weapons, personal belongings, maps, photographs, documents, and objects from everyday life during different periods, arranged to show how soldiers lived and what the region experienced.
The museum opened in 2016 after Sergei Dokuchayev purchased the former childcare building in 2014 and restored it with help from volunteers, search teams, and local supporters. It traces the area's past from late prehistoric times through the 14th century settlement records, the fierce 1941 battles for the heights, rural life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the region's role in Soviet military conflicts.
The name refers to the ridge that played a crucial role in the region's military past, and locals consider this place important for remembering their community's story. Visitors can observe how the exhibits focus on personal items and accounts that connect people to this specific land and its events.
The museum is free to visit and operates during daytime hours, making it easy to include in a day trip to the region. The tour does not take long to complete, and staff members are friendly and available to answer questions about the exhibits and local history.
A German motorcycle that survived the war is one of the rare functional vehicles on display, offering a tangible connection to the conflict that is often overlooked by visitors. This machine provides insight into the equipment used by opposing forces and serves as an unusual artifact that brings the period closer to life.
