Городок на Маяте, Archaeological site in Parfinsky District, Russia.
Городок на Маяте is an archaeological site on elevated ground near the Mayata River in Russia's Archangelsk region. Defensive earthen walls and ditches define its structure, with multiple cultural layers below containing the remains of residential buildings and stone furnaces from different settlement periods.
Settlement began in the 5th century with evidence of population transitions across multiple phases. Excavations from 2006 to 2008 uncovered residential structures with stone furnaces and documented this important early medieval chapter in the region's history.
The site bears traces of both Baltic and Slavic populations who left artifacts from distinct settlement phases. Bronze ornaments, glass beads, and handmade pottery discovered here reflect the daily lives and craftsmanship of those who inhabited the place.
Access to the site is restricted due to its status as a federal cultural heritage location and special permission is needed for research visits. Contact local authorities beforehand to clarify access possibilities and current conditions.
Three pre-Slavic buildings discovered in 2005 provide rare evidence of the transition process between Baltic and Slavic populations. This find reveals how different populations coexisted in this borderland region southeast of Lake Ilmen.
