The Vakhtangov House is a two-story brick building in central Vladikavkaz, listed as a federal cultural heritage site and used today as a memorial museum. Inside, it has furnished rooms arranged as they would have appeared in the 19th century, along with a small space for theatrical performances.
The building was constructed in 1870 as a private merchant residence, and it became notable when Yevgeny Vakhtangov, one of Russia's most influential theater directors, was born there in 1883. After decades of neglect, a major Moscow theater funded its full restoration and turned it into a functioning cultural center.
The house is named after the theater director Yevgeny Vakhtangov, who was born there in 1883 and went on to shape Russian stage art in the 20th century. The rooms display personal objects and furniture that show what daily life looked like for a merchant family in the Caucasus region.
The house is open to individual visitors and groups and offers guided tours through the historic rooms. It is worth checking in advance for scheduled theatrical events, which take place regularly inside the building.
Vakhtangov left Vladikavkaz at the age of 22 and never returned permanently, meaning his childhood home reflects an influence he had with almost no adult connection to the city. The house is now formally linked to the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow, which manages it and organizes events there.
