Памятник Создателям российских железных дорог, Railway pioneers monument near Kazansky Railway Station, Moscow, Russia
The Monument to the Creators of Russian Railways is a bronze and granite sculptural composition featuring Emperor Nicholas I surrounded by six historical figures who shaped the country's railway development. The work stands in front of Kazansky Railway Station and depicts the different roles each person played in building Russia's railway system.
The monument was inaugurated in 2013 to commemorate 180 years of Russian railway history beginning with the first rail connections in the 1830s. The selection of seven figures depicted reflects different phases in which Russia's railway network was built and expanded.
The figures display Franz von Gerstner holding a locomotive model and Pavel Melnikov carrying architectural plans, while the Cherepanov brothers hold their tools. This arrangement shows the different roles - from engineers to architects - who worked together to build Russia's railway network.
The monument stands directly in front of Kazansky Railway Station and is easy to access when entering or leaving the station. Informational plaques beside each figure explain who the people were and their contributions, allowing you to examine the composition at your own pace.
Minister Mikhail Khilkov holds a map of the Russian Empire while Sergei Witte displays his official medals in his civil servant uniform. These details emphasize that government officials, not just engineers, played crucial roles in expanding the railway network.
