Karlshamns Castle

Karlshamns Castle is a stone fortress on Frisholmen island at the entrance to Karlshamn harbor, featuring military structures built during different periods. The remains include defensive walls, an ancient dungeon, and a historical well that visitors can still see on the site.

The fortress was built starting in 1675 during conflicts between Sweden and Denmark, serving as a strategic defense point for nearly 2 centuries. Despite its vulnerability to attacks from the mainland, it remained an important part of regional protection efforts.

The rebuilt island church within the fortress serves as a venue for celebrations today, linking modern gatherings with the site's long history. Visitors experience how this military structure has transformed into a place where people mark personal milestones.

The fortress is accessible during summer months when visitors can explore the fortifications and historical remains on the island. Reaching the site involves traveling across open water, so visitors should be prepared for changing weather conditions.

The fortress dungeon once held Vitus Andersson, who refused to sell his land on Trossö island to authorities. His resistance became a notable part of local history when that area later became a major naval installation.
