Construction of the fortress began in 1675 during Swedish-Danish conflicts, serving as a strategic defense point for nearly 200 years despite its vulnerability to mainland attacks.
The rebuilt island church within the fortress complex functions as a wedding venue, connecting modern celebrations with historical architecture.
Visitors can reach the fortress during summer months to explore the military structures, ancient dungeon, and historical well that remain on the island.
The fortress dungeon held Vitus Andersson, who refused to sell his Trossö Island property for the establishment of what later became the Karlskrona naval base.
