Hornborgs slottsruin, Medieval fortress ruins in Kville socken, Sweden.
Hornborgs slottsruin is a fortress site where stone foundations of castle walls remain visible on a cliff above the small settlement of Slottet in Tanum Municipality, south of Hamburgsund. The visible remains indicate the original layout of the defensive structures and outer walls.
The fortress was built in 1455 and served as a stronghold until Danish forces under Christian II destroyed it in 1531. This destruction marked the end of the site's role as a functioning military installation.
The ruins once represented power and control over the surrounding region and its trade connections. Walking around the site, visitors can sense how the cliff-top location reinforced this authority.
The site is accessible on foot with no special equipment needed to explore the ruins and stone remains. Climbing to the top of the cliff provides a better view of how the fortress was positioned and the surrounding landscape.
The founder, Tord Karlsson, was murdered by his own Danish subordinate just one year after the fortress was completed. This violent event reveals the deep tensions between Danish and Swedish powers at that time.
