Suntaks gamla kyrka, Medieval church in Tidaholm Municipality, Sweden
Suntaks gamla kyrka is a sandstone church with a nave, chancel with apse, and walls covered with medieval lime paintings spanning different periods. The building displays Romanesque features and preserves both architectural and decorative elements from several hundred years.
The church was built in the latter half of the 12th century and belongs to a rare group of buildings from that era featuring an apse. The chancel and chapels were modified later, while the medieval wall paintings were added in phases over the following centuries.
The wooden ceiling displays two paintings from 1769 by bell ringer Anders Wetterlind showing the Fall of Man and the Last Judgment. These works reveal how religious themes remained alive in the room's decoration across the centuries.
The church is located at coordinates 58.1288, 13.8687 and welcomes visitors interested in examining its architectural features and historical artwork. The interior lighting is often natural, so visiting on bright days helps you see the paintings and details clearly.
A replica of the Suntakstolen sits in this church, while the original 12th-century carved chair with a wolf head is kept at Västergötland Museum. This rarely preserved piece of furniture reveals the skilled craftsmanship of medieval carving.
