Avion, Functionalist apartment building in Americké námestie, Slovakia.
The Avion is a residential building on Americké námestie in Bratislava featuring three connected wings of varying heights. The two outer sections rise six stories while the central part extends seven stories, housing a total of 118 apartments.
Josef Marek designed this building following an architectural competition in the late 1920s, with construction completed between 1931 and 1932. It was built during a period when Bratislava was expanding and needed modern residential complexes.
The building reflects how people lived in the 1930s, mixing shops and homes in one place where residents and shoppers naturally crossed paths. The arrangement of separate entrances allowed families to have their own spaces while remaining part of a shared community.
The building has 25 shops on the ground floor with six separate entrances leading to the residential units above. Apartments range from one-room to four-room layouts, offering different sizes for various household needs.
The building has three closed facades that maintain privacy while its southwest face opens toward the surrounding streets and square. This asymmetrical design creates a connection between the building and the public spaces around it.
