Fortified Hill Works

Fortified Hill Works is an archaeological complex covering about 20 acres of hilltop enclosures with walls reaching between eight and ten feet high along natural elevations. The site contains ceremonial mounds and a defensive ditch outside the main wall structure that together form a defined system.

The complex was first documented in 1847 by surveyors Squier and Davis, who recorded and analyzed its structure. This early examination laid the foundation for understanding this ancient construction and its importance in North American archaeology.

The earthworks display construction methods developed by the Native Americans who lived here, evident in the patterns you see as you walk the grounds. The layout shows how people used this hilltop location for their purposes over time.

The site is accessible by walking paths across the grounds that allow visitors to explore the various hilltop structures and walls. Wearing sturdy shoes is recommended as you will be walking over uneven terrain and elevated areas.

Modern remote sensing technology has revealed hidden details of the wall structures that are not visible to the naked eye. These new findings show aspects of ancient construction methods that archaeologists previously did not fully understand.
