Junction City Prison, Correctional facility in Junction City, Ohio.
Junction City Prison was a correctional facility in Ohio built across expansive grounds with multiple structures and a main cellblock of three stories constructed from brick. The complex was known for brick manufacturing, with products used in state construction projects and local street work.
Ohio converted a brick manufacturing plant into a satellite facility in 1913 to house elderly and disabled inmates from Columbus Penitentiary. The institution operated until 1977, when it closed.
The complex served as a filming location for the 1980 movie Brubaker, which explored prison reform through its portrayal of institutional conditions. The stark, industrial setting shaped the film's visual narrative and made the site significant in cinema history.
The site no longer operates as a correctional facility and visitors should be aware it is a historical location with limited access. It is wise to gather local information beforehand and check which areas are open to the public before planning a visit.
After closure, a section of the former building became home to Perry County Pizza, which manufactured frozen pizza kits for school fundraising events. This unexpected reuse shows how the abandoned structures found new purpose in later years.
