Mr. Floppy's Flophouse

Mr. Floppy's Flophouse is a former mansion in Oakland containing roughly 20 rooms connected through a maze-like layout of multiple entrances and exits. The winding structure creates several distinct spaces now used for different activities and gatherings.

The site began in the 1850s as a brothel and bar serving gold prospectors during the California Gold Rush. It later became a hangout for writer Jack London and other notable figures of the era.

During the 1990s, the venue transformed into a center for electronic music events, featuring performances by notable acts including Psychic TV.

Visitors should allow time to explore the different rooms and hidden passages since the building has a non-linear layout. Comfortable shoes are recommended as there is considerable walking involved.

The original wooden bar from the 1870s still stands within the building, connecting visitors directly to the Gold Rush era. This piece of wood has witnessed decades of stories and encounters.
