North Avenue Bridge, Suspension bridge in Chicago, United States
The North Avenue Bridge spans 420 feet across the Chicago River with a central truss section supported by two 70-foot pylons at each end.
Following a deteriorating bascule bridge from 1907, engineers developed this innovative hybrid suspension and cable design, completing construction in May 2008.
The bridge forms an integral connection between Chicago neighborhoods while maintaining clear views of the city skyline through its purposeful structural design.
Supporting 40,000 vehicles daily, the bridge includes dedicated lanes for motor traffic and incorporates pedestrian walkways for safe river crossing.
The structure combines suspension and cable-stayed engineering principles, making it one of the first hybrid bridges of its type in the United States.
