North Avenue Bridge, Suspension bridge in Chicago, United States
The North Avenue Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Chicago River with a central span supported by tall towers at each end. The structure combines different engineering systems to safely carry vehicles and pedestrians across the river.
An older bridge at this location was replaced in the early 2000s with this new construction, which blends multiple load-bearing systems in its design. The project was part of Chicago's effort to create modern infrastructure across the river.
The bridge connects two neighborhoods and allows pedestrians to cross the river while taking in views of the city skyline. Visitors notice how the structure itself has become part of daily life, with people using it constantly from both sides.
The bridge experiences heavy traffic from vehicles and pedestrians throughout the day, so expect delays during busy hours. Pedestrians have separate pathways on the bridge that provide access to both riverbanks and adjacent walkways.
The design combines two different engineering systems in a single structure, making it an early example of this hybrid approach. This combination was chosen to best meet the specific demands of the Chicago River crossing.
