Polish American Museum, Cultural heritage museum in Port Washington, United States.
The Polish American Museum is a building with 30 rooms that houses 15 exhibition galleries, a research library, and a military studies center. The collection focuses on the history and culture of the Polish American community and their contributions to the United States.
The museum was founded in 1977 and received its official approval from the New York State Education Department. It grew out of the Polish American Citizen's Association to preserve the history of Polish immigrants in America.
The exhibits show Polish folk art, traditional costumes, and portraits of people who shaped Poland and its diaspora. You see works by artists and figures whose stories reflect the Polish American community.
The museum has a bilingual research library with extensive documentation about Polish heritage in America, including the Henry Archacki Archive. Plan enough time for the various galleries and archival materials depending on what interests you.
The collection includes plaster casts of Frédéric Chopin's death mask and left hand that were transported directly from Warsaw. These rare replicas are part of remembering one of Europe's greatest composers.
