Progress of the State, Monument sculpture at Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul, United States
The Progress of the State features a quadriga with four horses pulling a chariot and three human figures on the south portico entrance.
Daniel Chester French and Edward Clark Potter completed this copper sculpture in 1906, drawing inspiration from their earlier Columbus Quadriga at the 1893 World Fair.
The four horses represent earth, air, fire, and water, while the female figures symbolize industry and agriculture, and the charioteer holds a cornucopia.
The sculpture requires reguilding with 23-karat gold leaf every two decades to maintain its appearance atop the Minnesota State Capitol building.
The quadriga design differs from traditional governmental architecture by replacing the neoclassical triangular pediment with this mounted sculptural group at the dome base.
