Rydell National Wildlife Refuge, National Wildlife Refuge in Woodside Township, Polk County, Minnesota
Rydell National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area in Minnesota combining forests of maple and oak, wetlands, and tallgrass prairie across about 2,120 acres. These diverse habitats support many bird species and other wildlife throughout the year.
The refuge was established in 1992 to protect the wetlands and grasslands in northwestern Minnesota. This protected area plays an important role in preserving habitats for migratory birds passing through the region.
Visitors come here to experience forests, wetlands, and grasslands by walking or cycling, learning about the wildlife that depends on these habitats through signs and programs.
Access the refuge from U.S. Highway 2 by heading south on Polk County Road 210. Five marked trails offer different ways to explore, whether by foot, bicycle, or during winter months.
The Friends of Rydell Refuge Association offers electric golf cart tours so that people with difficulty walking can still experience the natural areas and wildlife.
