Shack Mountain, Colonial Revival house in Charlottesville, United States.
Shack Mountain is a one-story, T-shaped residence with two projecting octagonal spaces at the front, supported by a porch with paired stucco columns. The building includes a basement and a rear wing containing additional rooms.
The building was constructed in 1935 as a retirement residence for architectural historian Fiske Kimball. It received National Historic Landmark designation in October 1992.
The house reflects a thoughtful application of classical design principles valued in the Charlottesville area. The spaces show how earlier architectural ideas were adapted into a modern residence.
The property sits roughly three kilometers north of Charlottesville and is accessible by local roads. Visitors should check access policies beforehand, as the location is fairly remote.
The windows feature a triple-hung sash system, which is a rare architectural detail. Inside, a curved door leads to a round vestibule, an unexpected geometric feature.
