The building represents the establishment of Catholic worship in Cape Girardeau, which began with periodic priest visits to settlers in 1821.
The church holds regular Mass services, with Saturday confessions from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM and First Friday Eucharistic Adoration after 6:30 AM Mass.
The church tower endured two lightning strikes throughout its history, requiring repairs that maintained its architectural authenticity and structural integrity.
