St. Mary's Catholic Church
St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic parish church in historic district of Riverside, Iowa.
St. Mary's Catholic Church is a red brick structure built in Gothic Revival style with a prominent central bell tower and stained glass windows on Jefferson Street. The complex includes the main church, a rectory, a former church building, and a school structure that reflect 19th-century religious development.
The congregation was established in 1841 when Reverend Samuel Charles Mazzuchelli founded the parish and purchased land for the initial church building. The current red brick structure reflects the evolution of religious life in Iowa throughout the 1800s.
The parish reflects the religious traditions brought by Irish and German immigrants who settled in the region during the 1800s. It continues to serve as a gathering place for community events and shows how faith shaped the town's social life.
The church is easily accessible from Jefferson Street in the historic district area. As an active parish, it holds services throughout the week and weekends, so visitors should plan their visit accordingly.
The church houses a Moline pipe organ from 1883 that is still used today. A comprehensive restoration completed in 2015 returned the instrument to its original sound and allows it to continue providing music for services and events.
