Kinnick Stadium, Football stadium at University of Iowa, Iowa City, United States.
Kinnick Stadium is a football stadium at the University of Iowa in Iowa City that hosts home games for the university team. The seating forms a horseshoe shape with a press box on the west side and large video boards at both ends.
The stadium opened in 1929 and was originally called Iowa Stadium. The current name was adopted in 1972 to honor Nile Kinnick, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1939 and later died in World War II.
Children at the nearby University hospital can watch games from their rooms, which has created a special tradition on game days. After the first quarter ends, fans, players, and coaches turn toward the hospital and wave to the young patients looking out from their windows.
The best views of the field come from seats along the sidelines and from the upper rows of the horseshoe section. Most areas are accessible by ramps and elevators, with wheelchair seating distributed across several levels.
The visiting team locker room is painted entirely in pink, a design choice made by former coach Hayden Fry. He hoped the color would have a calming effect that might make opposing players less aggressive.
