Old Post Office, Federal building in downtown Iowa City, United States

The Old Post Office stands as a limestone structure with Beaux Arts architectural design features, displaying symmetrical proportions and classical ornamentation throughout its exterior.

Built in 1904 and expanded in 1931, this federal building operated as the central post office until 1975, when postal operations moved to a new facility.

The structure transformed into the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center in 1981, providing essential services and activities for thousands of elderly residents each month.

Located at coordinates 41°39′38″N 91°31′52″W, the building occupies less than one acre within the Iowa City Downtown Historic District.

The 1931 expansion of the building matches the original structure so precisely that distinguishing between old and new sections remains impossible.
