Description
The George Rogers Clark Monument is a bronze sculpture group composed of seven figures, including a mounted rider at the center and six additional figures on foot. The arrangement depicts a scene of westward expansion during the early American period.
History
Sculptor Robert Ingersoll Aitken created this monument in 1921 with funding from philanthropist Paul Goodloe McIntire. The work was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
Culture
The monument depicted George Rogers Clark on horseback with three frontiersmen and three Native Americans, representing territorial expansion during the Revolutionary War period.
Practical
The University of Virginia removed the monument in 2021 and placed it in storage while consulting with Native American communities. Visitors interested in viewing it should contact the university for current information about its location and accessibility.
