Ward Reservation

Ward Reservation is a protected area with sprawling forests, open fields, and wetlands spread across rolling terrain between two communities north of Boston. The landscape offers different habitats within easy reach along marked paths.

The land was assembled starting in 1940 with a gift from Mrs. Charles W. Ward, followed by twelve more donations through the end of the century. This gradual expansion protected the area from development over several decades.

Stone walls from colonial times wind through the property, showing how the land was once farmed by early settlers. These structures tell the story of rural life in Massachusetts through physical traces you can still see.

About 13 miles of marked trails cross the grounds for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, with options changing by season. The paths are maintained to accommodate different outdoor activities throughout the year.

Holt Hill, the highest point, holds stones positioned to mark the solstices while framing views toward Boston and distant mountains. Few visitors realize these markers reveal an ancient interest in tracking the sun's movements.
