Barack Obama Presidential Center, Presidential museum and library complex in Jackson Park, Chicago, United States
The Barack Obama Presidential Center is a complex of three buildings in Jackson Park featuring a museum tower, event spaces, and archive facilities. The compound covers a large area and connects enclosed exhibition rooms with open-air sections and green spaces.
Planning for the center started after 2009 with a search for a Chicago site, with Jackson Park chosen in 2014. Construction began in 2021 following legal debates over using a protected park for a privately managed project.
The center takes its name from the first US president with African American roots, marking the historical connection between Chicago's South Side and the country's political narrative. Visitors can trace how the city shaped the politician's career and which local concerns influenced his time in office.
The complex sits in the southern part of Chicago and is reachable by public transit, with visitors advised to allow time for security checks. The outdoor areas are freely accessible, while entry to museum spaces varies by availability.
The design comes from the New York architecture firm Tod Williams Billie Tsien, known for its restrained forms and integration of nature and buildings. The landscape plan uses native plants and aims to respect and extend the natural setting of the park.
