Pleasant Mountain, Mountain summit in Denmark, Maine, US.
Pleasant Mountain is a summit in the town of Denmark in Maine, rising to about 2,006 feet (611 meters) above sea level. The top opens up onto bare rock ledges with no tree cover, and a fire tower stands there above the surrounding southern Maine forest and lake country.
In the 1800s the mountain was used for timber cutting, which shaped the economy of the surrounding towns and left marks on the hillside forests. When forest fires became a growing concern in the early 20th century, a fire tower was added at the summit to watch over the region.
The fire tower still standing at the top draws curious visitors who climb it for a wider view over the surrounding lakes and forests. It has become a small landmark in its own right, something many hikers look forward to reaching after the trail levels off near the summit.
Four marked trailheads give hikers different ways to reach the top, with some routes steeper and more direct than others. Conditions vary a lot between seasons, so gear suited to the time of year makes the outing more comfortable and safer, whether you come in summer or in winter snow.
Turkey vultures and other birds of prey circle regularly over the bare ledges at the top, making this an unexpected spot for watching raptors up close. Visitors who are not there for birdwatching often find themselves stopping to look up at the birds soaring just overhead.
