Archives of Traditional Music

The Archives of Traditional Music is an academic collection housed on the second floor of Simon Music Library, containing thousands of recordings, manuscripts, and photographs. The materials come from field research and document musical practices from many countries and time periods.

The archive was founded to collect and preserve music recordings from different parts of the world. Over the decades, it grew to include recordings from the 1890s and became an important repository for musical documents.

The collection documents musical traditions from different cultures, preserved through recordings made by researchers in the field. You can explore diverse forms of musical expression from around the world.

Visitors can listen to recordings in listening rooms and research the collection. The facility is easy to access within the university library and provides everything needed for research.

The archive holds over 3,000 field collections gathered by anthropologists and folklorists that cannot be found anywhere else. Many of these rare recordings are valuable to researchers studying musical practices of different communities.
