Chalet of the Golden Fleece, Historic Swiss chalet museum in New Glarus, US
The Chalet of the Golden Fleece on 2nd Street is a Swiss-style house containing a large collection of objects from various countries and time periods. The rooms display European craftsmanship, historical textiles, and other items gathered from multiple travels across the Atlantic and around the world.
The house was built in 1937 by architect Jacob Rieder and reflects the tradition of Swiss settlement in the region. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015 as one of only three authentic Swiss chalets remaining in Wisconsin.
The house reflects how Swiss immigrants preserved their heritage by collecting objects from their homeland and travels around the world. The rooms display artifacts that show the connection many residents felt to Europe and the places they had visited.
The house can be visited on weekdays and Saturdays, with hours varying by season. It is recommended to check current visiting times before arriving and to allow time to explore the collection carefully.
The collection includes items with royal and aristocratic origins, including a pendant that once belonged to Empress Carlota. These rare pieces alongside ancient objects reveal the extensive travels and connections the residents maintained with European high society.
