Columbus Park of Roses, Public rose garden in Clintonville, United States
Columbus Park of Roses is a 13-acre rose garden within Whetstone Park featuring more than 11,000 rose plants from approximately 350 different varieties. The grounds include over one mile of paved pathways with benches for walking and sitting throughout the space.
The land began as a family farm in the early 1800s and later served as Victory Gardens during World War II, when around 500 garden plots were cultivated. After the war, the area became an official rose park in 1950.
The garden displays five distinct areas that showcase different gardening styles and purposes. Visitors can observe how roses are used in formal designs, historical collections, and practical home gardens for learning.
The garden is open year-round, though the best visiting time runs from mid-June through mid-September when most roses are in bloom. The flat, paved pathways are easy to walk and well-suited for exploring during a few hours.
The Heritage Rose Garden preserves rose varieties cultivated before 1867, documenting the genetic history of these plants. These older varieties reveal how roses have evolved over time and which traits influenced modern breeding practices.
