North Carolina State University Memorial Belltower, Memorial tower at North Carolina State University, United States.
The North Carolina State University Memorial Belltower is a granite tower on the university campus in Raleigh, North Carolina, rising to about 115 feet (35 meters). It has a four-faced clock section decorated with eight carved American eagles and rests on a large concrete foundation.
Construction began in 1921 with a formal ceremony but slowed considerably during the Great Depression, and the tower was not finished until 1937. This long gap between start and completion is part of the story the site carries.
The tower carries the names of alumni who died in World War I, with one name standing for those who could not be identified. Walking around the base, visitors can read these inscriptions carved into the stone.
The tower is easy to reach from the main campus paths and can be visited any day without restrictions. The interior is generally not open, but the area around the base is a good place to stop and look around.
Each year, a student running event starts elsewhere on campus and ends at the tower, with participants eating donuts along the route. The money raised through the event goes to children's hospitals.
