John Boyle O'Reilly Memorial, Bronze memorial in Back Bay, United States
The John Boyle O'Reilly Memorial consists of a bronze bust and a figure group depicting Erin between Patriotism and Poetry on a granite wall.
Created by Daniel Chester French in 1896, the memorial honors the Irish-born writer and activist who passed away in 1890 at age 46.
The monument features Celtic designs, including a Celtic cross and knots, reflecting O'Reilly's role in establishing Boston as an Irish cultural center.
Located along Boston's Fenway near Boylston Street, the memorial stands 10 feet tall and extends 6.5 feet wide on a pink granite foundation.
The bronze plate beneath the sculptural group states that Poetry and Patriotism offer laurel and oak from which Erin weaves a wreath for heroes.
