Hope Historic District, Historic district in Hope Township, United States.
Hope Historic District is a collection of 17 historic buildings spread across 40 acres on Union, High, Hickory, and Walnut streets in New Jersey. The structures include religious buildings, a mill, residences, and the Inn at Millrace Pond that together create the character of this settlement.
Moravian settlers founded this community in 1769 and initially called their settlement Greenland. Over time the name changed and the settlement evolved, becoming an important regional center with multiple functions.
The district reflects how religious buildings shaped daily life, with structures like St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Gemeinhaus serving as gathering spaces for the community. These places reveal the spiritual and social bonds that tied people together across generations.
The district stretches along County Route 521, making it accessible by car and on foot to view the main structures. Walking is the best way to see the building details and understand how the spaces connect to each other.
The Gemeinhaus was built as a church in 1781 but later became the county's first courthouse before becoming a bank today. This single building reveals how the community's needs and functions shifted across different periods.
