Embalse de Guri, Reservoir in Bolívar, Venezuela
The Embalse de Guri is a large reservoir in the state of Bolívar, Venezuela, formed by damming the Caroní River. It is about 58 km wide and nearly 110 km long, making it one of the largest bodies of water in the country.
Construction on the Guri Dam began in the early 1960s, with the first section starting operations in 1968 and the full project completed in 1978. The dam was later raised to increase its water storage and power output.
The area around the reservoir is spread out, so having your own vehicle makes it much easier to get around. Stay clear of dam infrastructure zones and follow local safety signs near the water.
The reservoir contains several small islands formed when rising water levels submerged old hilltops, leaving only their peaks above the surface. The lake also holds fish species like the pavón, which draws local anglers to its shores.
