Bismarck Tower, Observation tower in Neusäß, Germany
Bismarck Tower is an observation tower made of stone located on Steppacher Berg, featuring a rectangular base and a viewing platform at the top. The structure stands approximately 20.5 meters tall and offers views across the surrounding landscape.
The monument was built between 1901 and 1905 based on a design by Wilhelm Kreis to honor Otto von Bismarck, the first Chancellor of the German Empire. During the First World War, it served military purposes as an observation post, and its original flame bowl was taken away during that period.
The tower belongs to a network of Bismarck monuments that were built across Germany in the early 1900s. These structures show how people at that time chose to honor important historical figures through public works.
The tower is accessible daily from April through October and is maintained by the Recreation Association of Augsburg. The site offers straightforward access and parking is available nearby.
During the First World War, the tower was used as an anti-aircraft position, an unusual military role for what was built as a memorial. This wartime use left its mark on the structure and became part of its story.
