Altes Schloss Oettingen

Altes Schloss Oettingen is a Baroque structure positioned between Hof and Manggasse streets, featuring a tower-shaped gateway and extensive gallery wings built in the 17th century. The complex displays a carefully planned sequence of rooms with both representative and residential areas.

The original medieval structure was converted into a residence for the Protestant Oettingen line during the 16th century. This transformation sparked a religious division within the city, as the Catholic branch favored the New Castle instead.

The place takes its name from the Oettingen family, who established their roots here centuries ago. The layout reveals how living quarters and seat of power were closely intertwined in the lives of the ruling family.

The former castle church with its choir section remains open to visitors and serves as a burial chapel for the Oettingen-Spielberg family. Keep in mind this is an active place of prayer and respectful conduct is expected.

Emperor Charles VI stayed overnight in the palace's imperial chambers on December 10, 1711, while traveling to his coronation journey in Frankfurt. This rare imperial visit shows how significant this location was to the broader realm.
